I have the honor to enclose for the ... perusal of Lord Remberly a Certificate from my Medical adviser Sir Ranald Martin; it precludes all hope of my resuming service at Hongkong next April. In consequence of the effects resulting from the dangerous and protracted illness which originally caused my departure from that place last year and which has invalided me since.
As stated by Sir Ranald, the disease to which I have had to fall a victim, has only very recently been rendered amenable to treatment, and has left me in such a condition that six months leave, meaning, as Sir Ranald has explained to me, six months from the termination of my present leave on the 15th of next April will be necessary to fit me for the discharge of my duties at the close of the ensuing summer.
